Narcan: Saving Lives in Mesquite
In 2023, the Mesquite Police Association (MPA) and MPA Charities launched an important life-saving initiative: providing Narcan to officers of the Mesquite Police Department. This effort began after the City of Mesquite declined to supply Narcan directly to its officers — leaving MPA and MPA Charities to step in and fill the gap for the safety of both officers and the public.
What is Narcan?
Narcan (the brand name for naloxone) is a life-saving medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. It works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain, quickly blocking the effects of drugs like heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers. When administered promptly, Narcan can restore normal breathing within minutes — even when a person is unresponsive and near death.
Narcan is safe, easy to use, and has no effect on individuals who are not experiencing an opioid overdose. Because of its effectiveness and simplicity, Narcan has become an essential tools for first responders nationwide.
Why It Matters for Police Officers
Police officers are often the first on scene when a person is suffering from a life threathening overdose — frequently arriving minutes before paramedics. In those crucial moments, access to Narcan can mean the difference between life and death.
Overdose scenes are not always calm or safe. They can be volatile, unpredictable environments involving panicked bystanders, active drug use, or potential violence. For safety reasons, the fire department and paramedics sometimes elect to stage nearby and wait until police officers secure the area before entering. This makes it even more critical that officers have Narcan readily available — so they can immediately begin lifesaving measures the moment they arrive.
Since beginning the Narcan program, MPA and MPA Charities have distributed doses directly to officers, ensuring they have immediate access to this vital medication. The results have been powerful:
Dozens of lives have been saved thanks to the quick actions of Mesquite Police Officers administering Narcan before medical help arrives.
These success stories underscore how vital it is for every officer to have this tool readily available. The MPA believes no officer should be left without the means to save a life when seconds count.
Continuing Our Mission
The Narcan program reflects the core mission of MPA Charities — supporting both our law enforcement community and the residents they serve.
